Call to Action for an incoming ACE Teacher to the Tampa Bay Area
Dear ND Club of Tampa Bay:
My name is Hank Jenkins and I’m a 2010 graduate of the the University of Notre Dame. I have just recently begun summer training with the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Program. I am excited to begin teaching middle school social studies and religion at Holy Family Catholic School in St. Petersburg starting this fall. The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) is a two-year service program offering college graduates the opportunity to serve as full-time teachers in under-resourced Catholic schools across the southern United States.
I’m writing you today to solicit any advice or leads you may have on possibly securing a car for this upcoming academic year. I have looked into the possibilities of either walking to school or taking public transportation, however, according to Google maps it will take approximately 45 minutes on public transportation each way from the ACE community house in Pinellas Park that I am living in to Holy Family Catholic School. Walking would take an hour and a half each way. Ideally, I would like to spend less time on transportation to and from school so that I can devote as much time to my students as possible. I was wondering if you know of anyone that might be willing to offer suggestions that could resolve this transportation obstacle. Or, if you know of anyone that might be able to loan a car to the St. Petersburg ACE community who I could contact, I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to meeting you and all in the St. Petersburg/Tampa area! Go Irish,
Hank Jenkins

Melissa Cook Memorial Foundation Dream Weekend
The Melissa Cook Memorial Foundation was created by Melissa’s parents, Paul and Linda Demo, in memory of Melissa who was tragically killed in downtown Chicago when scaffolding fell from the John Hancock building on the eve of her 30th birthday. Our Foundation is dedicated to making a post-secondary education possible through need-based scholarships to students who best embody the spirit and characteristics of Melissa Cook.
In addition to this Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Demo donated money to the University of Notre Dame to create the Melissa Cook Softball Stadium, the current home of the ND Softball team.

ND FOOTBALL TICKETS FOR THE TAMPA BAY CLUB
With the release of ticket lottery forms for the upcoming season, the club is happy to announce that we will have 50 tickets available for the Pitt game.
In addition, the club has an allocation of 50 beds, at the Sacred Heart Parish Center on campus . These beds are located at The Sacred Heart Parish Center (formerly known as St. Joe Hall). For those of you who aren’t aware of the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, it is located on St. Joseph’s Lake, next to Moreau Seminary, and thus close to all campus activities. Sacred Heart Parish Center, located on St Joseph's Lake on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, is a building steeped in tradition. Built in 1919 as the college seminary for the Congregation of the Holy Cross, this building housed generations of the Holy Cross, priests who were influential in the lives of many families. The building reverted to a graduate residence in the late seventies and was then taken over 1992 by Sacred Heart Parish.
This location provides unique on campus accommodations. You will get to experience the excitement of being part of campus life (again or for the first time).
The facility includes:
- Clean, well kept but 'Spartan type" dorm rooms
- One man's and one woman's bathroom on each floor - newly renovated
- Soap, towels, wash clothes, linens and blankets
- Most rooms have two single beds
- Room assignments are all tentative and they reserve the right to place individuals in whatever rooms are available.
- Sacred Heart does not have an elevator. If you have a special need - handicapped or elderly please advise me ASAP.
- There is no alcohol permitted in the dorm at any time.
- Parking is available in front of the Sacred Heart Parish Center (off Douglas Road). If you are driving you will need a parking pass (which is included). This pass only allows you to park at the parish center.
The accommodations are Spartan but are more than offset by the sharing of the weekend as a community of the ND faithful. The prices for this year’s club tickets and beds will be $375 for a package deal (two game tickets and 2 beds for two nights) or $200 for a pair of tickets to the game.
Information on how to enter the lottery for the club is in the annual dues mailing about how to reserve not only the beds but tickets as well. Any questions, please e-mail Michael Faehner at mfaehner@mfaehner.com
Excellence in Teaching Nominations
You can nominate a teacher that you know!
The Notre Dame Alumni Association invites K–12 educators for a weekend of personal reflection and professional renewal at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.. This award-winning conference is open to all teachers and administrators from public, Catholic, and private schools nationwide, not just Notre Dame alumni. It combines practical application and inspiration to empower educators to change emotionally, intellectually, and psychologically.
This year’s conference takes place October 22-24. The conference will challenge educators to move beyond teaching as a profession to teaching as a calling. Assistant Provost for Enrollment Daniel J. Saracino, ’69, ’75 M.A., will be the keynote speaker, and energetic “Master Teacher” and Motivator Dr. Adolph Brown III and Director of Take Ten Ellen Kyes will be the workshop shop presenters. This year’s conference will motivate educators to teach outside the box to achieve a learning experience filled with Rigor, Relevance, and Relationship. Finally, it will address outside influences that affect learning in the classroom and provide management tools to teach students conflict resolution skills.
Alumni clubs across the country sponsor their best and brightest educators--those who embody the spirit of Notre Dame. The Notre Dame Club of Tampa Bay is once again honored to sponsor a local educator to attend this cutting edge educational conference. The Club is currently seeking nominations of educators from the Tampa Bay area. If you would like to nominate an educator, please send a brief email letter telling us about the educator and why you recommend he/she be selected. Please send nominations via email to Michael Faehner at mfaehner@mfaehner.com.

RentLikeAChampion.com
We wanted to let your ND Club know about a new lodging option for families or large groups traveling to South Bend for the 2010 football season. Founded by three 2001 Notre Dame graduates, www.RentLikeAChampion.com is a website that allows families or large groups to book nice homes near ND campus for half the price of hotel rooms. This year, we have partnered with Anthony Travel Inc. to help provide great lodging options for families or large groups traveling to the game together. You can visit their website at Anthony Travel - ND Football page They will take care of your flights and we can provide a great house just steps from the stadium.
We know that it can be a hassle for a family or group to have to divide up into 3 rooms at a dumpy hotel 10 miles from the stadium and end up paying $400 or more a night PER ROOM (or $2,400 for the group) since hotels price gouge ND Alumni on ND football weekends. Imagine your entire family or group being able to stay in the same nicely appointed house and have a BBQ in the spacious backyard the night before the game. Then on the day of the game you have a nice breakfast in your own kitchen and WALK over to the stadium to enjoy the festivities. (or have a 5 minute drive on residential streets in South Bend.... avoiding the traffic nightmare on the main roads.) Or you can host a tailgate at the house! Avoid all the hassles of traffic and simply walk back home after the game and watch the rest of the day's football games in the comfort of a nice living room with your family and friends.
We have had over 300 home rentals over the last 6 years and almost every family or group that has rented a house tell us they will NEVER GO BACK TO A SOUTH BEND HOTEL ROOM AGAIN. Renting a house near campus is just a better way to experience ND Football. We have over 50 homes available for each of the ND Football games next year. Most of these are within 2-3 blocks of the stadium and are owned by ND professors, alumni, other professionals in the area. You can even rent the former home of Knute Rockne!
As fellow Notre Dame alumni, we want to make the South Bend football weekend experience better for everyone. That’s why we started the website. We still have many homes available for every game, but we start selling out for the big games in Early June. We even offer homes for rent for Junior Parents' Weekend, Commencement, ND Alumni Reunion Weekend, or for Weddings at ND in the summer. (just email us to ask!) The Entrepreneurial story of Rent Like A Champion was even featured in the Spring 2010 ND Young Alumni Newsletter. It was a great start-up experience with my fellow classmates Drew Mitchell '01 and Derrick Shenk '01.You can also contact us at 1-877-4HORSEMEN.

ND Football Ticket Exchange Program
Due to the high volume of requests and the logistical nightmare that the club has experienced in previous years, the Club has decided not to do any formal ticket exchange program. We do realize that there is a demand for this service and we would suggest that you try:
NDNation - http://www.ndnation.com/boards/index.php?marketplace
UHND - http://www.uhnd.com/bb/forum/index.php?action=main&forumid=4
Both of these websites have a free section of their message board dedicated to football ticket exchanges. Greater chance to get your tickets bought/sold… high exposure… much higher than our club website. It’s 99% domers on those sites so you’re going to resell your tickets to an ND grad. Good Luck and Hope that helps out!!!
